With his “Bidonville” album, released in 1966, Nougaro decides to release French music out of its boundaries, far from commonly tread ground, above and beyond habitually visited places. For the word crazy Toulousain singer, his inspiration comes from a mix of other landscapes.
Brazil offers him bossa nova, sensuality and the standard “Berimbau’ that he completely makes his own to create “Bidonville”, magnificently orchestrated by Baden Powell.
Next up he turns to Africa for the first time and its complex rhythms which he uses brilliantly on the tribal and bewitching “L’Amour Sorcier.”  The Afro-Brazilian influence creates interesting avenues, but jazz remains Nougaro’s main passion, the musical current he blends with best and through which his poetry is fully satisfied. With covers (“A Bout de Souffle” borrowed from Dave Brudbeck) and compositions (“Sing Sing Song”) Nougaro’s voice is a perfect match for the swing and syncopations of this demanding music.
“Bidonville” is a great jazz classic, with brilliantly composed songs of omnipresent inventiveness, and insolent youth.

Avec son album « Bidonville » sorti en 1966, Nougaro prend le parti de sortir la chanson française de son cadre étriqué et de l'emmener hors des sentier battus, par delà des territoires qu'elle n'a pas l'habitude de visiter. Pour le chanteur toulousain amoureux fou des mots, le salut viens d'ailleurs et passe par le métissage.
Le Brésil lui offre ainsi la bossa nova, sa sensualité, et le standard « Berimbau » qu'il se réapproprie complètement et remodèle sous la forme du morceau « Bidonville », magnifiquement orchestré par Baden Powell.
Il se tourne ensuite pour la première fois vers l'Afrique et ses rhythmes complexes qu'il utilise brillament sur le tribal et envoutant « L’Amour Sorcier ». L'influence afro-brésilienne ouvre de belles pistes mais le jazz reste la grande passion de Nougaro, le courant musical auquel il s'accorde le mieux et à travers lequel sa poésie s'épanouie pleinement. De reprises (« A Bout de Souffle » emprunté à Dave Brubeck) en compositions (« Sing Sing Song ») la voix de Nougaro s'accorde parfaitement au swing et aux syncopes de cette musique exigeante.
« Bidonville » est un très grand disque de jazz et de chansons, aux orchestrations brillantes, à l'inventivité omniprésente, et d'une insolente jeunesse.
