You may have never heard of Cliff Wagner, but listening to the two tracks on this obscure single will quickly earn this American artist a top ranking place in your playlists.
Released at the dawn of the 70’s on Egg, the excellent French pop/progressive label, both songs evolve within an excellent soul and rock register, tinted with wonderful shades of psychedelia.
If the poignant “Her name was Sue” plays the sober and reverent card, the sublime “Red Spot” blatantly brims over with energy with surprising flexibility. Right from the bass/drum break intro which holds its ground effortlessly against the sonic attacks of a dazzling fuzz guitar, shivers of pleasure arise, and feet begin to mechanically tap out the rhythm. And then a radiant Hammond organ comes in, followed by a mischievous wah-wah guitar and a discrete, but altogether essential bell.
This magical orchestration, product of Hervé Roy’s expertise as crafty arranger, disruptive with the work of the producer, offers Wagner’s gravely voice a sparkling box of soul. Here we have a great, very great track, pop attuned to the max. A real gem!

Sorties à l'aube des 70's sur l'excellent label pop/progressif français Egg, les 2 chansons de ce single évoluent dans un excellent registre soul et rock teinté de belles nuances psychédéliques.
Si le poignant "Her Name was Sue" joue la carte de la retenue et de la ballade vénéneuse, le sublime "Red Spot" déploie quand à lui une énergie autrement plus débordante et un groove à l'élasticité bluffante. Dès le break d'intro basse/batterie résistant sans mal aux assauts soniques d'une guitare fuzz éclatante, des frissons de plaisir se font ressentir et le pied commence à battre machinalement le rhythme. Puis un orgue hammond radieux arrive, suivit d'une guitare wah-wah d'humeur espiègle et d'une cloche discrète, mais néanmoins essentielle.
Cette orchestration magique due aux mains expertes d'Hervé Roy, arrangeur rusé et rompu au travail de producteur, offre à la voix rocailleuse de Wagner un écrin soul rutilant. On tient la un grand, très grand morceau à la sensibilité pop remarquable. Une vraie découverte !
